Where it all begins

Vision.

Belief.

Reflection.

Know where you want to get to, believe you can accomplish the goals and dreams you have, figure out what you need to do to to accomplish your goals.

You need to have a vision.  You need an end goal and a bunch of smaller goals leading you to that end goal.   Write these things down where you will see them everyday.

If you want to achieve, you have to believe.  It is that simple.

If you do not believe you can do it, you will not do it.  I tell my athletes this in one way or another time and time again.  It starts with you.

If you did not make the team, you need to believe you can the following year.  If you are not starting, you must believe that you are able to.  If you are not where you want to be, you have to believe you can get to where you want to be.

Why are you not where you want to be?  Are you not skilled enough?  Are you not strong enough?  Are you not consistent?  Does your attitude rub people the wrong way?  Are you poorly conditioned?

This simple process of questioning is called reflection.  It is a HABIT that is practiced by the best in every discipline.  Reflection leads to understanding, which leads to a decision:  am I willing to put in the time and effort into the actions that need to be taken to accomplish what I want to?  Generally speaking, reflect on what you can control.  You cannot control your coach, your teammates, or the environment in which you live.  Although support in these areas definitely help, they are things you cannot necessarily control (and things which you need to learn to accept, yet still figure out the best way to achieve your goals… a topic which will be covered another time).

So your development starts here.

Have a vision.  What is it I want to do?  How am I going to get there?

Believe.  It starts with you.

Reflect.  What am I doing that is helping me towards my goal?  Are there any changes to be made?  How do I know if I am making progress?  What is holding me back?  Remember, you can only control the actions that YOU take.

After that.. .its all about ACTION.  And in that action, plenty of Hard Work…
